Britons drinking less beer as recession bites

Many pubs across Britain have closed their operation and the usual buzz surrounding them is missing as recession-hit people choose not to take to the pint to relax.

Besides job losses and economic crisis, beer lovers are also grappling with the 2 per cent rise in alcohol duty announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling last week.New figures released by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) show that beer sales in the UK have plummeted by more than 8 per cent in a year, underlining the ongoing pressure on the ailing drinks and hospitality industry in the grip of recession.

The BBPA said fall in sales in the first quarter of 2009 was the highest first-quarter fall since 1997. The breakdown of sales across all outlets showed poor results, with many consumers opting to drink more cheaply at home. Supermarket and off-licence beer sales also dipped by 11 per cent.

The BBPA is the UK's leading organisation representing the brewing and pub sector. Its members account for 98 per cent of the beer brewed in the UK and own nearly two-thirds of Britain's 56,000 pubs. The organisation has led a campaign to try and persuade the government not to raise duty on alcohol further.

That's the bizarre sales pitch of a Beijing-based property developer who is struggling to combat a severe market slump in China that has seen home sales and prices plunge.

The company, Jin Tai Cheng, is luring potential buyers at its upmarket 'Ecological Bay' villa project with an invitation to date its salesgirls, whose photographs and vital statistics are put up on the company website. If the speed-dating service leads to marriage before May 30, the company will even offer a 'dowry' in the form of a 60,000 yuan (about $8,000) discount on the villa. The 'package deal', however, comes with a caveat: The couple should not divorce within a year!

The desperate sales pitch, evidently made in tie-up with a marriage broking service, is merely the latest manifestation of the grim outlook for China's real estate market.
"Many potential buyers are postponing plans to buy because of the uncertain economic outlook," says Li Jingguo, director of research at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), a leading government thinktank.

CASS professor Cao Jianhai says average urban residential property prices will likely fall 40-50% over the next two years.

The Chinese government has unveiled a 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) stimulus package, but the real estate market has shown no sign of a recovery so far, notes Ren Zhiqiang, president of the Huayuan group.

But China's developers seem to have taken it upon themselves to stimulate the market by commodifying women and offering them as part of a 'free wife and dowry' package deal.

Moms-to-be, here's another reason why you should stop drinking -- Downing alcoholic beverages, even in a small quantity, while pregnant can weaken a mother's bond with her child, says a new study.

Researchers at the Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University have based their findings after looking at 130 first-time moms with varying levels of alcohol intake.

After the births, the researchers looked at issues including delivery type, length of hospital stay, pregnancy and labour complications, maternal attachment and post-natal
drinking habits.

Subsequently, all the mothers were asked a series of questions after giving birth to determine the level of their attachment to their child.

It was found that the women who drank during pregnancy had significantly lower levels of bonding than non-drinkers. And, even mothers who drank no more than once a month, the study found, had to spend an extra day recovering in hospital. Dr Katrina Forbes-McKay, one of the researchers, was quoted by 'The Daily Telegraph' as saying: "This research confirms that drinking even small amounts during pregnancy has
negative outcomes for women.

"Alcohol use during pregnancy not only lengthens the mother's stay in hospital, but can be directly associated with lower levels of mother-child bonding."

She also stressed that the level of affection between a mother who drank during pregnancy and her child was not low, but lower than that of a mother who did not drink at all during pregnancy.

Gone are the days when India would be afraid of going on tour to Australia or the West Indies for fear of on-field humiliation. Things are different now. Now the home teams are wary of the confident Indians. India U-19's successful trip Down Under, where they won 3-2 in the five-match series, proved that Gen Y do not fear any team and know what they are capable of, feels coach Chandrakant Pandit.

"The youngsters nowadays are pretty confident of themselves and know how to handle the pressure. There was a time when players would be wary of touring countries like Australia and the West Indies where pacers dominate. Now the mindset has changed and I could sense that before taking off," the former India wicketkeeper told DNA.

"The boys were excited to play there and the confidence was evident in the style of cricket they played. We dominated the first two games," he said. Pandit, however, admitted that over-confidence was the reason behind the two losses. "They were very aggressive in their approach from the start and got carried away a little... some over-ambitious shot selection did us in. We got a convincing start and could have swept the series. Adaptability is the key and it will only come with experience," he said.

So what is it that gives the boys so much confidence?

"The youngsters get good exposure these days. They get good facilities and get to play on different surfaces. Also they get to see a Tendulkar, Sehwag, Dhoni or a Yuvraj bat 10 times in a month which gives them confidence. The game has changed completely due to the three formats. The teams now play fast in Test matches too and set big targets." Pandit is known for his experiments in the domestic circuit and he did that in Australia too by shuffling the batting order.

"I wanted them to play in tough situations. They will get mature after more match experiences. I think the BCCI should organise at least two tours a year," he said.
The director of coaching, MCA Indoor Cricket Academy, said there are some impressive players who could make it big in the future. "I think junior cricket is shaping up well. I was impressed by some of the players' talent and dedication. Avi Barot has good technique and can be a good longer version player. Mandeep Singh and Mayank Agarwal are aggressive. Skipper Ashok Menaria is good and is a very good fielder."

Pandit feels that some of the players are good enough to play in the U-19 World Cup to be held next year. "There are 7-8 players who are good enough."

Mumbai will house the 2011 World Cup secretariat and India will host 29 of the 49 matches after the event's Central Organising Committee reallocated the games on Tuesday following the ICC decision to drop Pakistan as a co-host of the tournament.

Accordingly, the opening match of the 10th edition of the quadrennial tournament would be held as scheduled in Bangladesh on February 19, 2011, while the final would be held in India.

The opening ceremony of cricket's showpiece event would also be held in Bangladesh on February 18.

"The Central Organising Committee, which continues to have Sharad Pawar heading it, has reallocated the matches by which India would host 29 games across eight venues, Sri Lanka 12 games across three and Bangladesh eight at two venues," ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat said here.

"Bangladesh would play host to two quarter finals while one quarter final each would be held by India and Sri Lanka who will also split the two semi finals equally. The final would be held in India (in March, 2011)," Lorgat said.

The reallocation of matches was necessitated by the ICC's decision to take away co-hosting rights from Pakistan due to security concerns. Pakistan was slated to host 14 ties, including a semifinal, while Lahore was named the home of the secretariat.

"The Central Organising Committee was also reorganised and will continue to be headed by Sharad Pawar with representatives from the three World Cup hosting countries and a representative of the ICC," Lorgat said.

The World Cup Organising Committee also relocated the Secretariat from Lahore to the BCCI's headquarters in Mumbai, besides appointing BCCI chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty as the Event managing director.

"Prof Shetty will be the Event managing director while I S Bindra, the special adviser to the ICC, would be a key person in the management of the World Cup. The secretariat will be in Mumbai in the offices of the BCCI", the ICC CEO said.

There would also be a venue inspection group to oversee the preparation for the mega event in which BCCI secretary N Srinivasan and Shetty, along with Bangladesh's Mahbubul Anam, are members, Lorgat said.

Lorgat assured that the security concerns of the various members of the ICC and the players would be addressed with the formation of a special committee, headed by BCCI president Shashank Manohar, to oversee the security details.

"The security arrangements are very important and a special committee with Mr Shashank Manohar at its helm would put together security plans for the successful conduct of the World Cup in 2011", the ICC official said.

"It will be an ongoing process till World Cup 2011, and we will do our best to convince players and other countries in addressing security issues," Lorgat said.

He also said that the ICC has not received any communication, in writing or otherwise, from the Pakistan Cricket Board about their team not wanting to play any World Cup tie in India.

"We have nothing on the table. We would cross the bridge when we reach it. I don't think Pakistan would object (to playing matches in India)," he maintained.

Lorgat did not read much into the decision of the Indian Premier League not to have members of the ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit overseeing its running of matches.

"It's the BCCI's prerogative whether to ask for ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit's assistance or not in the IPL," he said.

The meeting was attended by Pawar (chairman), Bindra, Manohar, Srinivasan and MP Pandove (all from BCCI), Lt Gen Sina Ibn Jamali, Mahbubul Anam and Shafiqur Rahnan (all from Bangladesh Cricket Board), DS De Silva, Nishantha Ranatunga, Sujeewa Rajapakse and Duleep Mendis (all from Sri Lanka Cricket Board) and Lorgat.

A British air stewardess was sacked for refusing to fly to Saudi Arabia after she was ordered to wear a traditional Islamic robe and walk behind male colleagues.

Lisa Ashton, who worked for BMI, was told that she was expected to wear in public in Saudi Arabia the abaya, a long black robe that leaves only the face uncovered.

She was also told that she should walk behind male colleagues irrespective of their rank, in order to conform with the social codes of the conservative country, The Telegraph reports.shton was instructed to consider the abaya as part of her uniform when flying to Saudi Arabia, but she informed her managers that she considered the requirement discriminatory, and was worried that Saudi Arabia was not safe to travel to because of the danger of terrorist attacks.

"It's not the law that you have to walk behind men in Saudi Arabia, or that you have to wear an abaya, and I'm not going to be treated as a second-class citizen," Ashton said.

"It's outrageous. I'm a proud Englishwoman and I don't want these restrictions placed on myself," she added.

Ashton, 37, had been working for the airline for nine years when they began their service to Saudi Arabia in 2005.

She was earning 15,000 pounds a year and flying to India, the Caribbean and the United States from her base in Manchester, but was horrified to read details of the regulations for staff orking on the new route.

Fiona is my neighbor. She turned 20 recently and her parents held a birthday party for her. I was one of those invited. The party began at about three in the afternoon. There were about twenty of us friends gathered in Fiona’s house. Everyone, especially Fiona, wore a happy smile. We gave our gifts to Fiona and she happily opened them. It must really be exciting to receive all those presents. Finally at about six in the evening the party came to an end. We were tired but happy. I helped Fiona clean up the mess we made and reached home.

There was a fire raging a short distance away. I got into my bike and went in the direction of the smoke. It was a row of motor-workshops and they were burning furiously. The police and the fire department had already cordoned off the area. I watched from a distance. The fire rose up to twenty meters. Now and then explosions can be heard as gas cylinders blew up in the intense heat. Finally the blaze died down and darkness enveloped us. The workshops were totally razed. Only red hot embers remained where they once stood. I returned home after everything was fine.

Ishtiaq Ahmed, who works as a spokesman for the Bradford Council for Mosques, lives with three generations of his family in a luxurious British home built by his father, a successful Pakistani-born businessman.

After the July 7, 2005 public transit bombings in London, which killed 52 people, Ahmed woke up, looked around his neighborhood and was troubled by what he saw. Three of the four bombers were from nearby Leeds and, like him, they had Pakistani backgrounds.

"There is a growing section of Muslim young people 16 to 25 who are increasingly becoming alienated, disillusioned and angry about a host of issues, such as unemployment, racism and British foreign policy," Ahmed said.

Many of these young people, he said, feel that the British government is against them.

"They see the government is willing to spend millions of dollars fighting Muslims in Iraq, but not help them with their problems at home," Ahmed said.

That can make them ripe for recruitment by Islamic extremists.

"People with a pan-Islamic agenda tell these young people: All your problems are because you are Muslim" -- living in a non-Muslim country -- "so we should all unite and assert ourselves and restore the glory of Islam," he said.

Even if only an estimated 3 percent to 4 percent of Muslim youth become extremists, Ahmed said, "that is still far, far too many."

The London bombings, like the Madrid train bombings in March 2004 and foiled terrorist plots elsewhere in Europe since, have forced Europe to focus on homegrown Islamic radicalism. Beyond implementing security measures needed to prevent terrorist attacks, Europe is trying to understand the sense of fury and alienation many Muslims feel and that, in a few rare cases, might lead them to try to murder their neighbors.

"The number of individuals in Europe who have joined violent jihadi movements has increased," said Alexander Ritzmann, an expert on Islamic terrorism from the Brussels-based European Foundation for Democracy and a former member of Germany's parliament. Based on terrorist incidents and intelligence dossiers, he said, "there has been an increase of planned attacks over the last five years."

To be sure, the number of European Muslims engaged in terrorism is minuscule compared with their overall numbers. Of the roughly 17 million Muslims living in the 27-country European Union, a total of 242 were charged with terrorism-related crimes from 2001 to 2006, according to a study by the Netherlands Institute for International Relations.

But support for terrorist attacks appears to be far more widespread.

Roughly one in seven Muslims in France, Spain and Britain believe suicide bombings against civilian targets can be justified at times to defend Islam against its enemies, a 2006 Pew Research Center survey showed. And with the Iraq war, the Afghanistan campaign and Israel's recent war in Gaza, experts say al-Qaida's notion that Islam is under attack by the West is gaining currency among Muslims in Europe.

Terrorist groups like al-Qaida and militant Islamists have tried to tap into Muslim fury in Europe, with some success. Foreign policy often is cited as a key motivating factor by terrorists.

One of the 2005 London suicide bombers, Mohammad Sidique Khan, left behind a video in which he justified his attack, saying, "Your democratically elected governments continually perpetrate atrocities against my people all over the world. Your support makes you directly responsible."

The 29 bombers who carried out the 2004 Madrid attacks, which left 191 dead and 1,755 wounded, were inspired by al-Qaida's 2003 call for action against countries supportive of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, court documents show.

But the picture of Muslim fury is complicated, and it is easy to confuse the anger of European Muslims over their treatment as a disenfranchised minority in Europe -- such as the riots that rocked Paris' heavily Muslim immigrant suburbs in the autumn of 2005 -- with sympathy for anti-Western terrorism.

In the 1960s and '70s, European governments recruited manual laborers from poor, rural, mostly Muslim countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, Morocco and Algeria without paying much attention to how they might fit into European societies. Governments assumed these workers eventually would return to their countries of origin.

Instead they remained, struggling against problems such as discrimination and poverty. Many lived in substandard housing, frequently were denied jobs and homes due to their ethnic background, and scored considerably lower than native Europeans on school tests.

After the terrorist attacks this decade, European governments finally woke up and began promoting integration and equal opportunities. But the measures are so recent, it will be years before their impact can be gauged and, in some cases, felt.

Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to attribute support for Islamic terrorism to Europe's failure to integrate Muslim immigrants. Nearly half the convicted terrorists in the study by the Netherlands Institute hailed from middle-class families that appeared to be successful models of integration. So were the men who committed the London bombings in 2005.

Peter Neumann, director of the International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence at King's College in London, says an identity crisis is at the crux of sympathy for and involvement in Islamic terrorism.

"European Muslims feel torn between the culture of their parents they do not identify with and Western culture that does not really accept them," he said. "This is true for all immigrants, but the key difference is that there is no ideology for Hindus, for instance, saying that the West is at war with your religion and that there are Zionists and crusaders who want to kill you."

What emerges from interviews with former Islamic extremists is that years of alienation can give rise to radicalism, even among the middle class.

Maajid Nawaz, a former British Islamist who now runs one of Europe's leading counter-radicalism organizations, the Quilliam Foundation, talked to the U.S. Senate's Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs last July about how as a young man he felt torn, like so many second-generation Pakistani immigrants, between British culture and that of his parents.

"Despite my liberal British upbringing, I was subject to an appalling level of racist violence by a minority of thugs," he said. "Many of my white friends were stabbed before my eyes simply for associating with me."

"Whilst such a crisis of identity initially concerned only racial and ethnic dimensions, the tragic slaughter of white Muslims that was to eventually play out in Bosnia-Herzegovina brought to the fore of my mind Europe's Muslim question," he told the committee. "Through this rude awakening, and for the first time in my life, I became critically aware of a Muslim identity."

Beware the caliphate

The path to violent extremism can be found in political Islam, which views Islam not just as a religion but as a political system under which all Muslims one day will be united, Nawaz says. Al-Qaida and its offshoots preach violence as a means to this goal, while more moderate groups believe political Islam should be achieved through nonviolent means.

Britain's most successful Islamist organization, Hizb ut-Tahrir, known by the acronym HT and whose name means Party of Liberation, is banned in the Middle East and in Germany. HT holds that Muslims, if convinced by ideology, will rise up and engage in peaceful coup d'etats in Muslim countries to restore the Islamic caliphate the group claims was destroyed when Turkey became secular a century ago. HT's biennial meetings in Britain draw an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people.

Officially, HT condemns terrorism and maintains it opposes violence of any kind in the name of Islam.

"In the West, Hizb ut-Tahrir works to cultivate a Muslim community that lives by Islam in thought and deed, whereby adhering to the rules of Islam and preserving a strong Islamic identity," says the movement's Web site. "The party does not work in the West to change the system of government, but works to project a positive image of Islam to Western society and engages in dialogue with Western thinkers, policymakers and academics."

HT officials did not return JTA's calls seeking comment.

Ishtiaq Hussain, a former member of HT who now works with the Quilliam Foundation, says the key to successful recruitment of radicals is exploiting whatever grievances extremists can find among young Muslims.

"Recruiters will say that the war in Iraq shows that Americans want to kill Muslims and we have to unite against this," Hussain said. "They will basically take any problem you have and turn it into a Muslims vs. the West issue."

HT recruits primarily at universities, where its leaders run prayer services and other events but do not necessarily identify themselves as HT members. Recruiters keep their eyes out for those who seem most receptive to their message, befriending and encouraging them to attend more and more events.

A former recruiter himself, Hussain recalls luring students away from more moderate Muslim groups by discrediting them as government stooges and enforcing the idea that only HT represents true Islam.

"All the books you read, the people you talk to," are HT, Hussain said. They "tell you not to listen to your friends or family."

Like any other cult -- or, perhaps, college fraternity -- HT gives members a sense of empowerment through belonging to a tight-knit, elite group. But unlike a fraternity, HT also sometimes encourages recruits to turn against those closest to them.

"There was that feeling of being on the cusp of a new world order which would revive the glory days of Islam," wrote another former HT member and co-founder of the Quilliam Foundation, Ed Hussein, in Britain's Independent newspaper last April. "For a 17-year-old who felt out of place in the U.K., it was very attractive. Everywhere we went, we were the brothers to be respected. It was intoxicating."

Moderate Muslims say groups such as HT distort true Islam in recruiting young people to the cause of extremism. While HT does not promote terrorism, Hussain describes it as a conveyor belt to violence.

"They never tell you to go blow yourself up, but they do not condemn it either; they leave it up to the individual," he said. "And we believe their kind of thinking can lead some people to violent acts."

An engineer and doctor who tried to blow up the Scottish airport in Glasgow in 2007 attended HT meetings. So did Omar Sharif, a Briton who tried but failed to blow himself up in Tel Aviv in 2003.

To be sure, there is no sure recipe for transforming an alienated Muslim into a terrorist.

Across Europe, there has been a resurgence in religiosity among Muslims since the launch of the so-called war on terror. Many have turned to faith in the face of anti-Muslim sentiment, and devout Muslims insist Islam is a force for good, not ill.

Activists like Ishtiaq Ahmed say Muslim leaders must make a greater effort to convey to young people that being a politically involved British citizen is compatible with being a religious Muslim.

"Islamic faith institutions have a duty to protect the young Muslim population from dangerous and violent propaganda," he said. "We can't bury our heads in the sand and pretend this is not a problem."

Recently, many were concerned that Final Fantasy XIII might see a delay when Yoichi Wada said that Dragon Quest IX would be delayed to July, thus Final Fantasy XIII seeing a delay. Luckily, there will be no delay in the release of Final Fantasy XIII. Motomu Toriyama, the director of Final Fantasy XIII told Famitsu that Final Fantasy XIII will not see a delay, and he also talked about the demo and the game itself. This news is exciting, not only because the release of Final Fantasy XIII will not see a delay, but the demo and game information is very interesting.

When asked about the demo, Motomu Toriyama said that the demo’s length would be about an hour. That is a sizable length for a demo, especially since demos released in the past have not seen a length like that. He also went on to say that gamers will be able to play as Lightning, but the demo will stop before the meeting with Snow, another main character in Final Fantasy XIII. That leaves the player wanting more, and is the main purpose of a demo, so that’s not disappointing. For those of you who are interested in the gameplay, you will be excited to know that Motomu Toriyama stated that the full battle system of Final Fantasy XIII will be in the demo.

Nao Ikeda, the character designer for Final Fantasy XIII joined Motomu Toriyama in the interview to discuss the game and the characters. The first character that they talk about is the recently revealed character Sazh, who has a chocobo that rests in his afro. Not only does he keep a chocobo in his afro, he has bright personality and also has the most lines in the game. The chocobo does not show up in battle, but Toriyama said that he is in discussions to see if the chocobo can make it’s way into battle.

A group that is in Final Fantasy XIII was discussed too, and this group is named Nora. The group consists of the characters Snow, Lebreau, Maqui, and Gadot, with Snow being the leader of the whole group. It is also said that not only does Snow’s name come from the Japanese word for stray dog, but it also has a hidden meaning that players will figure out whenever they play the game. The name thing is also similar to Lightning’s name, which is said not to be her real name.

More tidbits about the group Nora was also shared. Nora is a group of youths who got together because they did not want to be controlled by the holy government. They help the people who are being forced to migrate to Pulse because their city is being purged. The group is said to also have a fifth member, but they won’t reveal the character because they said that the character it too cool to show off yet. So, the new character will not be in the demo, but will definitely be in the final game.

We have after much careful thought, and research decided it is time to disallow blogs in our system that do assignments for Pay Per Post, Social Spark, or any other IZEA company. This was a very tough decision but we have no choice.

They have been a good company for some of you. Unfortuneatly too much of what they ask of your blogs interferes with getting good results for our clients.

A few people have taken steps already to remove the scripts banners etc.. from their blogs and saw almost an immediate positive reaction.

If you only have 1 blog within our system you will have to remove all pay per post tracking codes, izea scripts, pay per post banners, count trackula codes and some tinyurl links associated with them…IF you want to stay with us.. and of course that is entirely up to you.

If you have multiple blogs and want to continue working for both companies… you will need to pick blogs that you want to stay with us and remove all the banners and tracking codes from that company.

Some of what must be removed is in this list:

Today , SriLankan cricket players were attacked by Terrorist in Lahore , Pakistan. They were attacked by a group of 12 terrorist (near Lahore cricket stadium)with mask in their face. Lahore is a main city of Pakistan and terrorist can easily came there and attacked over SriLankan players , then what’s the level of security measures were given by Pakistan government. All terrorist came there with full of weapons like machine guns , rocket launchers etc.

Pakistan should give full protection to the foreign team , it’s a primary need. How can terrorists roam easily there , what’s going on there?……. CAUGHT IN A STORM

Black clouds gathered above us, but we were too intent on playing football. We hoped that the clouds would go away so that we could continue playing. Our hopes were dashed when suddenly heavy rain began to pour. In a few seconds we were all soaked to the skin. To make matters worst, lightning flashed dangerously close to us. The defeating thunder and howling wind did not help either. We ran towards a large tree under which we had parked our bicycles. The tree provided some shelter from the rain and we were tempted to remain under it. However we knew that it was dangerous to stay under a tree during a thunderstorm. So we got on our bikes and pedaled off. There was no shelter available nearby. So I, for one, decided to go home. Since I was already completely wet, I might go home instead to seeking shelter. Luckily I found a bus-stop with a roof nearby. I hurried gladly under the roof even though I had to share it with a dozen other people who were also soaked to the skin. It was a bit of squeeze but no one complained. For an hour the storm lashed everything around us. Finally the rain slowed down to a drizzle and the wind died down. I could still hear distant thunder but the worst of the storm was over. So happily OI got on my bicycle and pedaled home.

We are a noisy lot that is what our teachers say about us. This is largely due to Ah Keong. He is the noisiest of us all. His voice is like that of a bull frog but volumes louder. It seems he cannot talk softly. Actually he does not talk, he shouts. In this noisy bunch lives a boy who hardly ever opens his mouth. This is Mike, the boy who sits next to me. He is such a gentle and soft creature what one would think that he is a sissy .This is not so. No one dares call him one for he is a member of the school’s Karate club .Then there is Doris, our class monitor. She sits right in front of the teacher’s table .She is such a model student that all the teacher love her. We all love her for she does not boss us around. She was given up doing that long ago .All she does is to make sure that the teachers have sufficient chalk and that the classrooms clean. Right at the back of the class sits our class sleepy head .Mat seems to need more sleep than others. He catches cat-naps in between lessons. The astounding thing is that he can fall asleep almost instantly. The moment the teacher leaves after a lesson, Mat’s snores start up and we know he is at again. Remarkably he wakes up when the next teacher arrives. Every class has s clown. Our class has a jack, otherwise known as “Jocko the Clown”. He is always up to some prank or other ,putting tails on the boy’s pants ,frogs in the girls desks and powdered chalk on he teacher’s chair. So when we hear a girl scream or see men teachers strolling around with chalk on the seat of their pants, we know that Jocko has struck again. The other classmates too have their own unique personalities. Each contributed His or her part to our class. All in all we are a group of young children who perhaps are a bit noisy at time, but on the whole are well-behave and pleasant to be with.

MY NEIGHBOURS

Many of us live in housing estates. I live in one myself. The only thing about living in a housing estate is that we have many neighbors. Next to my house on the right lives families whose parents seem to be always scolding the children .I do not know them very well because they always appear angry. Never a day passes without hearing the children crying and the parents shouting at the top of their voices .On other side of my house, however, lives a very quite and polite family. Mr. Harrison is a quiet man who seems to manage his family very well. Though he has four children, which is one more than the other family, I never hear him scold his children .So his children never cry. What a wonderful family they are. Further down the road is a family whose radio is switched on most of the time, except late at night. His immediate neighbors must have a tough time putting up with the noise of the radio. Then there is a family whose members seem to live in a world of their own. Many times we have met along the road and not once have any of them even nodded his or her head in acknowledgment. They are not blind or deaf. Yet they walk straight past as if I am not there at all. I would not say that they are unfriendly. I guess they are simply not interested in knowing their neighbors. On the opposite side of the road live Mr.Lim and his family. Mr.Lim is a bird collector. So everyday a dozen or more birds sing melodious tunes beneath his front porch. It is preferable to the blare of the other neighbor’s radio. However the bird droppings can give off an awful stench. These are some of the neighbors living near me. There are others that I have yet to meet. However I am careful not to intrude on their privacy. The friendly ones smile or raise their hands. The not so friendly ones look away. I have to live among them, friendly or not.

Ear membrane, being very thin and delicate, feels the stresses maximum resulting in ear-ache. A train running through a tunnel increases the pressure of the air inside the tunnel to a good degree and a similar effect is produced on our ear drums.

b) If a bird does not flap its wings or does not use the buoyancy force to remain afloat, it will fall down because of the gravitational pull. Birds have specially modified flight muscles as well as 10 pairs of air sacs located in the body. While flying, the air sacs in the body and feathers get filled with air and provide buoyancy .The bones of the birds are hollow thus the body weight is reduced which too facilitates flying.

Then he happened to meet Anderson another trainee of the same age who became his close friend as time passed by. It was time for Jerome's brother and sister who started off their higher education which often demanded more money. Most of the time John proved to be a helping hand during tough times that prevailed in Jerome's family. It was the time John fell in love with Anna, the daughter of his senior trainer. Jerome felt very much afraid and shy to propose her. Every time he would try to approach her and return without disclosing anything. After a long struggle of 2 years with his conscience he made up his mind and approached her. It was Christmas time, fun and enjoyment were in no limits in that town. He dressed up to his best and waited outside the St. Peter's Church where she will drop in daily to offer her prayers. It was 5 in the evening, as usual she finished her prayers and came outside. She saw him waiting near the banyan tree next to the parking lot. She crossed the place and saw Jerome walking towards her with a smile.

This is a story about JEROME PARKER, a tea supplier working in a tea stall adjacent to the main road of a popular town. The story revolves around him from the age of 6 to 60, the distress, the difficulties, the challenges he faced during that period.

Jerome parker at the age of six started his life as a tea supplier following the demise of his parents. He had an uncle, a bad alcoholic who spends his time fully in drinks. Sad Jerome parker had to work hard for his brother and sister left behind by his parents. Clara and Stephen were only three years old and were not in a position to realize that their parents are dead. But Jerome took great care of them. He made them study in a corporation school and took over their schooling expenses too. He had to work day and night to make their living expenses. His only entertainment was his cycle with which he goes around and supplies tea to vendors and other people. Thank God his master James was a kind hearted man who was the only person to hire Jerome and supported his living. James, who owns the tea shop had no relatives. His beautiful wife and his charming son both died in a bomb blast that shattered the town a few weeks before(Jerome’s parents too lost their lives in the same blasts). Poor James saw Jerome in the form of his dead son and took good care of him.

For millions of teenage girls, the first high school boyfriend is a rite of passage. What most don't realize is that the relationship can spiral into something they never considered -- violence.

More schools opt to teach the warning signs of physical abuse in relationships.
But when a group of teenagers from South Kingstown, R.I., was recently asked how many knew someone who was a victim of dating violence, each one of them raised a hand.
"We all see it," said Ellen Thomas, a 16-year-old from South Kingston. "If not day to day, at least once a week or something in the hallway at school."
Indeed, one in 10 high school girls report being abused by a boyfriend, according to the Department of Justice. And high school girls are exposed to three times more abuse in relationships than adult women.

"I think a lot of parents don't realize how prevalent this actually is in the teenagers' lives," South Kingstown High School health teacher Karen Murphy said. "That this is something that goes on every single day."
Teenagers can sometimes have a harder time controlling their emotions than adults, explained Dr. Lea De Francisci Lis, a child and adolescent psychiatrist affiliated with New York University's Child Studies Center.

"Teenagers are more prone to violence because of their changing hormones and because their brains are still developing," she said. "This makes them more susceptible to mood swings and anger."

UK needs more migrants

The newly introduced points-based system (PBS) is the biggest shake up of the immigration system of the UK for 45 years. The 80 existing ways for economic migrants to enter the UK have been consolidated into five tiers, all of which are points-based. Under the new system, migrants are required to pass a points-based assessment before they are given permission to enter or remain in the UK. The points will be awarded to reflect the migrant's ability, experience, age and when appropriate the level of need within the sector the migrant will be working.The Tier 2 system came into effect on 28 November 2008. As it is a major route through which majority of prospective skilled migrants will enter the UK, its criteria for work permit will affect some two lakh individuals, who come to work, train or study in the UK every year from countries outside Europe's internal market, known as the European Economic Area (EEA).The citizens and for that matter the governments of major migrant-recipient countries are frequently suspicious of incomers, which is due to a political/populist conviction that immigrants not only reduce wages and increase unemployment among resident citizens but also destruct its culture; push up the crime rate; and exploit the social services provided by the host community. This conviction has given rise to hostility and racism.In contrast to the popular (mis)understanding, empirical studies show that immigrants complement natives in the production process, thereby increasing the productivity of natives and creating extra demand for goods and services. In studies by Glover et al. (2001) and Gott and Johnston (2002), it is found that the foreign-born population contribute around 10 per cent more to government revenues than they receive in expenditure, thus considerably reducing the taxation burden for the community at large. It is estimated that in 1999-2000, immigrants to the UK contributed £31.2 billion in taxes and consumed £28.8 billion in benefits and state services, a net contribution of £2.5 billion. It shows that overall immigrants contribute more in taxes than they receive in benefits. In another study by Sriskandarajah et al. (2005), it is found that between 1999 and 2004, the relative net contribution of immigrants to public finances increased to £41.2 billion in 2003-2004, a 22 per cent increase (compared with a six per cent increase from people born in the UK). It is further found in the House of Lords Report (2005) that, migration has supported prosperity and growth and added value to the UK domestic products and to jobs.Though the new system to curb the inflow of migrants gives an impression that the UK has over-supply of migrants, but in reality it needs more migrants than it has now to sustain its economy. With ageing and declining populations in Europe, there is a 'demographic deficit' which is estimated to grow in days to come as the Eurostat Report (2005) says that by 2025 there will be a 20 million shortfall of workers across the EU. The 'greying' of Europe's population means many EU members like the UK will have to depend on migrants from non-EU countries to fill job vacancies. But, with the improvement of the situation back home and opening of other attractive EU job markets, the UK will look less attractive destination for young skilled migrants. So in days to come, the debate may shift from too many migrants to not having many.There is no denying the fact that migration needs to be regulated in the interests of the receiving countries, the sending countries and the migrants themselves. The newly introduced PBS system promises objective, transparent and efficient way of migration control. It remains to be seen how this new system suits the UK labour market which can not afford an under-supply of migrants to sustain its economy as Lord Swaraj Paul has said, "…the status Britain has enjoyed throughout its history compared to its size and population is largely due to the fact that we welcome immigrants from all over the world and have recognized their value and contribution."

Autopsy for Jett Travolta

An autopsy is to be performed to Jett Travolta 16, the late son of John Travolta (54) and Kelly Preston (46) and brother of Ella(8). He died on Friday and the autopsy is planned on Monday. Jett Travolta died at the family vacation in Bahamas. According to sources a house care taker found him unconscious early in the morning on Friday. He apparently believed to have hit his head against the bath tub and fell unconscious. He was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead.

It is designed and produced by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and administered through the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC). The three-hour, computer-adaptive test is almost exclusively multiple-choice and yields four scores: Total, Verbal, Quantitative and Analytic Writing Assessment.
What the GMAT Measures:
GMAC claims the GMAT can measure basic analytical, quantitative and reasoning abilities developed over time. However, according to the GMAC web site, the GMAT does not measure: “every discipline-related skill necessary for academic work, nor does it measure subjective factors important to academic and career success, such as motivation, creativity, and interpersonal skills.” It continues, “GMAT scores cannot be used to estimate potential for success in a career, because many factors other than basic verbal and mathematical abilities influence work performance.”

Test Administration:
The GMAT switched to a computer adaptive testing (CAT) format in 1997. Since that time, multiple problems with cheating, computer system failure, and scoring errors have been identified. In 2000 ETS admitted that scores for 3% of all tests taken between February and March were miscalculated, but students were not notified until December. Common pencil-and-paper test-taking strategies cannot be used on computer delivered exams. Test-takers are unable to underline text, scratch out eliminated choices or work out math problems on screen. Studies also indicate that computer screens take longer to read than printed materials, and that it is more difficult to detect errors on computer screens. Taking the GMAT costs applicants $200 each but colleges pay nothing to receive scores. Since 1985, GMAT has increased fees by $170 per test but offers no financial assistance for test takers of limited financial means

GMAT Grading and Scoring:
The Verbal and Quantitative sections are each scored on a scale of 0-60. A Total score is calculated by adding Verbal and Quantitative scores then converting this number to a 200-800 point scale. The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) is scored on a 1-6 scale. This section, in which students have an opportunity to display creative, innovative and concise writing skills, is graded by two “evaluators,” one of which is a computer.

Predictive Validity and Margin of Error:
GMAC has been able to validate the GMAT for just one purpose: predicting first-year graduate school grades. But GMAC concedes that the GMAT can predict less than 17% of the variation in these grades on average. Independent researchers put the percentage much lower at between 4% and 9%, meaning that over 90% of what determines how well a student will do in their first year in business school is not captured by the test. According to GMAC’s own studies, all graduate schools have access to a better predictor of success - - undergraduate GPA’s.

I have resided in Faridkot, Dinalpur tehsil, Ukada district, Suba Punjab state, Pakistan since my birth. I studied up to class IV in a government school. After leaving school in 2000, I went to stay with my brother in Tohit Abad mohalla, near Yadgar Minar in Lahore. I worked as a labourer at various places till 2005, visiting my native once in a while. In 2005, I had a quarrel with my father. I left home and went to Ali Hajveri Darbar in Lahore, where boys who run away from home are given shelter. The boys are sent to different places for employment.
One day a person named Shafiq came there and took me with him. He was from Zhelam and had a catering business. I started working for him for Rs120 per day. Later, my salary was increased to Rs200 per day. I worked with him till 2007. While working with Shafiq, I came in contact with one Muzzafar Lal Khan, 22. He was from Romaiya village in Alak district in Sarhad, Pakistan. Since we were not getting enough money, we decided to carry out robbery/dacoity to make big money. So we left the job.

We went to Rawalpindi, where we rented a flat. Afzal had located a house for us to loot… We required some firearms for our mission... While we were in search of firearms, we saw some LeT stalls at Raja Bazaar in Rawalpindi on the day of Bakri-id. We then realised that even if we procured firearms, we would not be able to operate them. Therefore, we decided to join LeT for weapons training.

We reached the LeT office and told a person that we wanted to join LeT. He noted down our names and address and told us to come the next day. The next day, there was another person with him. He gave us Rs200 and some receipts. Then he gave us the address of a place called Marqas Taiyyaba, Muridke, and told us to go to there. It was an LeT training camp. We went to the place by bus. We showed the receipts at the gate of the camp. We were allowed inside… Then we were taken to the actual camp area. Initially, we were selected for a 21 days’ training regimen called Daura Sufa. From the next day, our training started.

The daily programme was as follows: 4.15 am — Wake-up call and thereafter Namaz; 8 am — Breakfast; 8.30 am to 10 am — Lecture on Hadis and Quran by Mufti Sayyed; 10 am to noon - Rest; Noon to 1 pm - Lunch break; 1 pm to 4 pm - Rest; 4 pm to 6 pm - PT; instructor: Fadulla; 6 pm to 8 pm - Namaz and other work; 8 pm to 9 pm - Dinner
After Daura Sufa, we were selected for another training programme called Daura Ama. This was also for 21 days. We were taken to Mansera in Buttal village, where we were trained in handling weapons.
The daily programme was as follows: 4.15 am to 5 am - Wake-up call and thereafter Namaz; 5 am to 6 am - PT; instructor: Abu Anas; 8 am - Breakfast; 8.30 am to 11.30 am - Weapons training; trainer: Abdul Rehman; weapons: AK-47, Green-O, SKS, Uzi gun, pistol, revolver; 11.30 am to Noon - rest; Noon to 1 pm - Lunch break; 1 pm to 2 pm - Namaz; 2 pm to 4 pm - Rest; 4 pm to 6 pm - PT; 6 pm to 8 pm - Namaz and other work; 8 pm to 9 pm - Dinner.
After the training, we were told that we will begin the next stage involving advanced training. But for that, we were told, we had to do some khidmat for two months (khidmat is a sort of service in the camp as per trainees’ liking). We agreed. After two months, I was allowed to go to meet my parents. I stayed with my parents for a month.

Then I went to an LeT camp in Shaiwainala, Muzaffarabad, for advanced training...
We were taken to Chelabandi pahadi area for a training programme, called Daura Khas, of three months. It involved handling weapons, using hand grenade, rocket launchers and mortars.

There were 32 trainees in the camp. Sixteen were selected for a confidential operation by one Zaki-ur-Rehman, alias Chacha, but three of them ran away from the camp.
Chacha sent the remaining 13 with a person called Kafa to the Muridke camp again. At Muridke, we were taught swimming and made familiar with the life of fishermen at sea… We were given lectures on the working of Indian security agencies. We were shown clippings highlighting atrocities on Muslims in India. After the training, we were allowed to go to our native places. I stayed with my family for seven days. I then went to the LeT camp at Muzaffarabad. The 13 of us were present for training.

Then, on Zaki-ur-Rehman’s instructions, Kafa took us to the Muridke camp. The training continued for a month. We were given lectures on India and its security agencies, including RAW. We were also trained to evade security personnel. We were instructed not to make phone calls to Pakistan after reaching India.

The names of the persons present for the training are: n Mohd Azmal, alias Abu Muzahid n Ismail, alias Abu Umar n Abu Ali n Abu Aksha n Abu Umer n Abu Shoeb n Abdul Rehman (Bada) n Abdul Rehman (Chhota) n Afadulla n Abu Umar After the training, Chacha selected 10 of us and formed five teams of two people each on September 15. I and Ismail formed a team; its codename was VTS. We were shown Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Google Earth’s site on the internet… We were shown a film on VT railway station. The film showed commuters during rush hours. We were instructed to carry out firing during rush hours — between 7 am and 11 am and between 7 pm and 11 pm. Then we were to take some people hostage, take them to the roof of some nearby building and contact Chacha, who would have given us numbers to contact media people and make demands. This was the strategy decided upon by our trainers. The date fixed for the operation was September 27. However, the operation was cancelled for some reason. We stayed in Karachi till November 23.

On November 23, the teams left from Azizabad in Karachi, along with Zaki-ur-Rehman and Kafa. We were taken to the nearby seashore… We boarded a launch. After travelling for 22 to 25 nautical miles we boarded a bigger launch. Again, after a journey of an hour, we boarded a ship, Al-Huseini, in the deep sea. While boarding the ship, each of us was given a sack containing eight grenades, an AK-47 rifle, 200 cartridges, two magazines and a cellphone.
Then we started towards the Indian coast. When we reached Indian waters, the crew members of Al-Huseini hijacked an Indian launch. The crew of the launch was shifted to Al-Huseini. We then boarded the launch. An Indian seaman was made to accompany us at gunpoint; he was made to bring us to the Indian coast. After a journey of three days, we reached near Mumbai’s shore. While we were still some distance away from the shore, Ismail and Afadulla killed the Indian seaman (Tandel) in the basement of the launch. Then we boarded an inflatable dinghy and reached Badhwar Park jetty.

I then went along with Ismail to VT station by taxi. After reaching the hall of the station, we went to the toilet, took out the weapons from our sacks, loaded them, came out of the toilet and started firing indiscriminately at passengers. Suddenly, a police officer opened fire at us. We threw hand grenades towards him and also opened fire at him.
Then we went inside the railway station threatening the commuters and randomly firing at them. We then came out of the railway station searching for a building with a roof. But we did not find one. Therefore, we entered a lane. We entered a building and went upstairs. On the third and fourth floors we searched for hostages but we found that the building was a hospital and not a residential building. We started to come down. That is when policemen started firing at us. We threw grenades at them.

While coming out of the hospital premises, we saw a police vehicle passing. We took shelter behind a bush. Another vehicle passed us and stopped some distance away. A police officer got off from the vehicle and started firing at us. A bullet hit my hand and my AK-47 fell out of my hand. When I bent to pick it up another bullet hit me on the same hand. Ismail opened fire at the officers in the vehicle. They got injured and firing from their side stopped. We waited for a while and went towards the vehicle.

There were three bodies in the vehicle. Ismail removed the bodies and drove the vehicle. I sat next to him. Some policemen tried to stop us. Ismail opened fire at them. The vehicle had a flat tyre near a big ground by the side of road. Ismail got down from the vehicle, stopped a car at gunpoint and removed the three lady passengers from the car. Since I was injured, Ismail carried me to the car. He then drove the car. We were stopped by policemen on the road near the seashore. Ismail fired at them, injuring some policemen. The police also opened fire at us. Ismail was injured in the firing. The police removed us from the vehicle and took us to the same hospital. In the hospital, I came to know that Ismail had succumbed to injuries.

Terror, unimaginable terror, returned to Mumbai's streets on Wednesday night, killing over 200 people, including Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, additional commissioner of police Ashok Kamte, and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar. All three died fighting the terrorists.
The obvious aim of the terrorists was to overawe the police force and bring the country's commercial hub to a standstill.
Moving about in groups of twos and threes, the terrorists struck with impunity all over the city, setting off coordinated multiple blasts and gunfire in a dozen areas across the metropolis, including the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station and two five star hotels - the Oberoi and the Taj. Guests were still being held hostage in the two hotels as commando forces were trying hard to retrieve the situation.
As indiscriminate firing and explosions at iconic landmarks showed no signs of easing after the first attack at Leopold restaurant in Colaba at about 9.30pm, the army was moved in while 200 NSG commandoes were rushed to Mumbai from Delhi. Mumbai has been cordoned off and people going home on Wednesday night were frequently stopped for checking.
The terrorists, who apparently arrived by sea with their explosives (their boat was later found by customs officers), did not even spare hospitals like GT and Cama, where gunfire was reported. Police and eyewitnesses said AK-47s, rifles and hand grenades were used at will by an unspecified number of terrorists.
Foreigners and policemen appeared to have been the main targets. Though no guesses were made about the identities of the terrorists, eyewitnesses said some of them spoke Arabic, and included Nigerian or Somali mercenaries.

Students of Ambedkar law college chennai were uncontrollable going on a rampage hitting each other with big iron rods and stones and used knives for protection and attack.Police were helpless as the Principal dint give orders to enter the college.The main reasons behind were unfolded by Madhan a law student pursuing a degree out therewho escaped unhurt narrates about the incident.
Madhan said " Oct 30th was Mr. Devar's anniversary,as a result the Devar caste students of Ambedkar law college published and printed posters and stuck them to all corners of the city.In that poster Mr Devar's photo was present and a few lines hailing him were present.Below a small note contained wishes by the Ambedkar college Devar caste students' wishes (WITHOUT ANY PICTURE OR ANY QUOTE OF MR.AMBEDKAR).As a result the SC students of that college were humiliated and targeted the Devar caste students.The action plan was planned in the morning and carried out in the evening.All tha students involved were boozed leading to an UNCONTROLLABLE HAVOC.Also he said the previous enemity behind the two groups made the issue more heated and led to a fierce clash between the students of the 2 castes.The students who finished the exams were targeted and those who came to rescue was not spared too.
There were a few cops who just watched the scenario during the start of the fight.Students used Iron rods and wooden logs as weapons and started attacking the other students who were returning from the exams in the evening.The main reason is yet to be known,sources say its internal politics.Police arrested 4 persons regarding the issue.
